P.E.A.R is a day school, afterschool and summer program for the St. Mary and surrounding Avon community. The program incorporates physical education and athletic development exercises, drills, and games and youth yoga to improve the body-mind connection. The physical and athletic development sections of the P.E.A.R. program use movement exercises and drills, activities and games to emphasize the overall development of the student's physical capacities, fundamental movement skills, and the ABC's of athleticism: agility, balance, coordination, and speed. Students have many opportunities to attend advanced physical education after-school programs such as youth yoga, foot skills (March only), strength and conditioning, and other physcial development programs. Healthy living requires that our kids push, pull, throw, climb, lift, and jump, effectively and safely. No matter what they are doing, whether it be competing in sports or just running around being a kid, these are important fundamentals to learn and remember, and most of all, practice on a regular basis. In these movement class, the children learn all the fundamentals of a healthy lifestyle, fitness and experience coordination-building activities that are organized and supervised by movement experts (certified teachers, St. Mary staff members or coaches who completed Virtus and CYO coaches training).
Other programs include after-school basketball training sessions, volleyball, and "body-mech" camps. Register Online through the Parish Sports Pilot program. Click here to register. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Tim Maxey.
Rock The Challenge! Saint Mary student body dedicate their efforts to the ultimate fitness challenge course to promote a healthy lifestyle. Our goal at Saint Mary Avon continues to be developing a STRONGER STUDENT BODY!
The Cause!
Health benefits can be derived simply from becoming more physically active! Regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health. It can reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, strength your bones and muscles, reduce some cancers, control your weight and may improve academic achievement in students. Healthy living habits learned at a young age will carry on for a lifetime!
The Prayer!
At Saint Mary Avon, we chose to make this special obstacle course an ActivPrayerTM—an inspired action dedicated to an intention greater than ourselves (http://www.activprayer.com). Health and fitness becomes meaningful when we use it to glorify God and the body HE gave us. The body is a gift and we will run through the course and challenge ourselves mentally, physically and spiritually as a way of showing our appreciation for the gift of life we’ve been granted.
Through the support of Saint Mary PTU, Boosters and the Parish/School, over 200 students and faculty will once again participate in an obstacle course while praying to promote a healthy living through physical activity. Our PSR students participate in a post school session as well. We will ROCK THE CHALLENGE!
