St. Mary Avon Cross Country is open to all day school and PSR students in grades 1 to 8. Students from surrounding Parishes are welcome to join as well.
This is a sport that almost anyone can do and nearly everyone can improve at through practice and training. Runners are encouraged to have fun and improve throughout the season. Children involved in other fall sports are encouraged to participate as this program can be a great way build speed, stamina and proper running form. Emphasis is on the team aspects of the sport, respect of self and others and developing good running habits. Fundamental movement exercises along with flexibility, strength and agility drills are done as part of the training program to develop overall athleticism.
CYO meets begin the last weekend in August and run for 7 consecutive weekends. Intramural (Grades 1-2) meets are on Wednesdays in September. Intramural athletes run 1 mile compared to CYO athletes who run 1.5 miles (grades 3-6) and 2.0 miles (grades 7-8) respectively.
Practices begin the beginning of August and conclude in late September / early October. Intramurals will practice once per week and CYO twice per week. An additional weekly practice may be added prior to meets beginning. To accommodate other sports, team practices are conducted as optional training days. If you are available, show up and run with the team.
Parents are welcome to run with the athletes at practice and join the fun, too!
Cost is $45 for Intramurals (Grades 1-2) and $70 for CYO (Grades 3-8).
