What is AR (Accelerated Reading)?
Students in Grades 1-4 are involved in the Accelerated Reading Program. This program is beneficial to teachers, parents and students.
St. Mary's School uses the program to enrich our reading program. The students read books on their own level and then take a computerized test on what they have read.
The children benefit from AR in many ways. First and foremost, reading comprehension scores improve. Secondly, it has been shown that the more a child reads, the more his/her reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills improve. Last, but not least, students become more confident reading and try to move on to the next level of reading.
AR is designed for use by all students, regardless of reading ability. Our school subscribes to the Enterprise Edition of AR giving our students access to over 160,000 quizzes at different levels.
Our goal is to develop a solid base of reading skills that will enhance a lifelong love of reading, where our students will not only read well, but will be well read. Daily practice of reading (whether being read to, read with or independent reading) occurs at school. Follow up at home with daily time for reading is strongly recommended and encouraged (click here to learn more).
